Today we take a trip back to 1988 to a song by Megadeth off their third album “So Far, So Good…So What!” called “In My Darkest Hour.”  Dave Mustaine has stated in various interviews that the song was inspired after hearing about Cliff Burton’s death. According to liner notes on the album, Dave and bassist David Ellefson wrote the song in one sitting.  While inspired by Cliff’s death, it’s really about Mustaine’s breakup with his girlfriend, Diana.

The song was released as a single, but never ended up on the charts and the video was initially banned from MTV, because it was believed the lyrics were about suicide. The band was also highlighted in the movie “The Decline of The Western Civilization, Part II: The Metal Years” and ends with Megadeth performing the song live. The video has since aired on various music outlets and remains a fan favorite.

Happy Friday Metalheads! As I mentioned on our Instagram page yesterday (the_metal_wire) it’s our 1 year anniversary and I want to take the time to thank each and every one of you for all your support and dedication to The Metal Wire. We couldn’t have done it without you and we have lots of great things coming up for the future. With that being said today I’d like to take a trip back to 1988 to a song by Megadeth off their third album “So Far, So Good…So What!” called “In My Darkest Hour.”

Dave Mustaine has stated in various interviews that the song was inspired after hearing of Cliff Burton’s death. The song was released as a single, but never actually ended up on the charts. MTV also banned the video because they felt the lyrics were about suicide. The band was highlighted in the Penelope Spheeris movie “The Decline of The Western Civilization, Part II: The Metal Years” and the movie closes with Megadeth’s performance of the track. Spheeris also directed the video.
