MEGADETH – ALICE COOPER – NO MORE MR. NICEGUY – METAL REWIND

Happy Friday Metalheads! Today we take a trip back to 1989 to the movie “Shocker” for the track “No More Mr. Niceguy” by Megadeth, as well as the original by Alice Cooper released in 1973.

The original track by the Alice Cooper Band originally appeared on the band’s sixth album “Billion Dollar Babies.” In the song Cooper details the reactions of his mother’s church group about Cooper’s stage performances.  Cooper felt that if they wanted to complain, well then the gloves were off and he was ready.

Megadeth covered the song for the “Shocker” movie soundtrack and released it as a single in January 1990 and the track did really well on the music charts in Ireland, Finland and the U.K. The video for the song features new band members at that time, Marty Friedman and Nick Menza, who had been chosen to join the Megadeth fold after the departures of drummer Chuck Behler and guitarist Jeff Young. The song was also included on their 1995 B-side album called “Hidden Treasures.”

MEGADETH – IN MY DARKEST HOUR – METAL REWIND

Happy Friday Metalheads! As I mentioned on our Instagram page yesterday (the_metal_wire) it’s our 1 year anniversary and I want to take the time to thank each and every one of you for all your support and dedication to The Metal Wire. We couldn’t have done it without you and we have lots of great things coming up for the future. With that being said today I’d like to take a trip back to 1988 to a song by Megadeth off their third album “So Far, So Good…So What!” called “In My Darkest Hour.”

Dave Mustaine has stated in various interviews that the song was inspired after hearing of Cliff Burton’s death. According to liner notes on the album, Dave and bassist David Ellefson wrote the song in one sitting.  While the song was inspired by Cliff’s death, it’s true meaning is about Mustaine’s  breakup with his girlfriend, Diana.

The song was released as a single, but never actually ended up on the charts. MTV also banned the video because they felt the lyrics were about suicide. The band was highlighted in the Penelope Spheeris movie “The Decline of The Western Civilization, Part II: The Metal Years” and the movie closes with Megadeth’s performance of the track. Spheeris also directed the video.

The song(s) is based on the actions of a serial killer and the different methods they choose to use on their victims. Dave Mustaine has stated in interviews that the song was inspired by former drummer Dijon Carruthers, who was in the band briefly before Gar Samuelson was hired. Carruthers at the time was hanging out with people who were practicing the occult and many of the tracks on this album explore the theme of occultism.
