Today we take a trip back to 1988 to a song by Megadeth off their third album “So Far, So Good…So What!” called “In My Darkest Hour.”  Dave Mustaine has stated in various interviews that the song was inspired after hearing about Cliff Burton’s death. According to liner notes on the album, Dave and bassist David Ellefson wrote the song in one sitting.  While inspired by Cliff’s death, it’s really about Mustaine’s breakup with his girlfriend, Diana.

The song was released as a single, but never ended up on the charts and the video was initially banned from MTV, because it was believed the lyrics were about suicide. The band was also highlighted in the movie “The Decline of The Western Civilization, Part II: The Metal Years” and ends with Megadeth performing the song live. The video has since aired on various music outlets and remains a fan favorite.

The original track by the Alice Cooper Band originally appeared on the band’s sixth album “Billion Dollar Babies.” In the song Cooper details the reactions of his mother’s church group about Cooper’s stage performances.  Cooper felt that if they wanted to complain, well then the gloves were off and he was ready.

Megadeth covered the song for the “Shocker” movie soundtrack and released it as a single in January 1990 and the track did really well on the music charts in Ireland, Finland and the U.K. The video for the song features new band members at that time, Marty Friedman and Nick Menza, who had been chosen to join the Megadeth fold after the departures of drummer Chuck Behler and guitarist Jeff Young.
